Patristic Quote for the Day - Number 2

For our sakes He became a curse, that is, accursed; for it is written again, that 'Every one that is hanged on a tree is cursed of God.' But this act of His did away with the curse that was upon us; for we with Him and because of Him are blessed. And knowing this, the blessed David says: 'Ye are blessed of the Lord, Who made heaven and the earth;' for by His sufferings blessings descend to us. In our stead He paid our debts; He bore our sins, and 'the Lord gave Him up for our sins' as it is written. He bare our sins in His own body on the tree; for it is true that 'by His bruises we were healed.' - St. Cyril of Alexandria, Commentary on the Gospel of St. Luke, B#33, p. 609 (cited in *Grace for Grace: The Psalter and the Holy Fathers* p. 72,73)
